Asthma Drugs and Prostate Cancer Risk
Doctors are urging men who suffer from asthma not to stop taking their medication in light of the research that suggests a link between asthma drugs and prostate cancer risk.
An Australian study aimed to discover if there was a link between asthma and prostate cancer because both conditions are caused by inflammation within the body. They discovered that just having asthma increases a man’s prostate cancer risk by 25%, but there are suggestions that taking asthma medication could increase this even further.
An article in the Daily Mail suggested that:
- Inhaled steroids can increase prostate cancer risk by 40%
- Ingested or injected steroids can increase prostate cancer risk by 70%
However, a response by the NHS indicated that this interpretation of the results was too extreme.
This is only a preliminary study, and experts warn that more in depth research in necessary to discover the real impact of asthma drugs on prostate cancer. Men with asthma should not stop taking their asthma medication without consulting their doctor.
However, the study does indicate that men with asthma should be aware of the symptoms of prostate cancer and should perhaps be screened more frequently than men without asthma whatever medication they take.
