Prostate Hormone Treatment

Hormone treatment for prostate cancer is often used in conjunction with other therapies and has three main purposes:

  1. Prostate hormone treatment is used before radiotherapy and radical prostatectomy to increase the success rate of these processes
  2. Prostate hormone treatment is used after other types of treatment to reduce the risk of the cancer recurring
  3. Prostate hormone treatment is used in the advanced stages of prostate cancer to slow the cancer growth and relieve symptoms

How does hormone treatment for prostate cancer work?

The growth of cells in the prostate gland is controlled by hormones. Prostate cancer needs hormones, notably testosterone, in order to grow and spread. Hormone treatment for prostate cancer blocks the effects of testosterone, limiting cell growth.

Prostate hormone treatment does have certain drawbacks. Please see our post on prostate hormone treatment side effects.
